Design of ships and offshore structures
The design of ships and offshore structures and any structures used in the water shall be based on the calculations of the standard of Naval Architect and Marine Engineering. Compliance with all maritime regulations, safety, and sustainability of that structure must be taken into account in design and construction.
Hydrostatic and Stability
When designing a marine structure, it must always be assured of its stability. For this purpose, the intact hydrostatic is calculated on one or more water lines. In each of these conditions, the Righting Arm is also calculated. At this stage, the following parameters are calculated:
- Overall dimensions and irrigable area
- Size, displacement, float center, and wet surface
- Irrigable area, Center irrigable area
- Information about the maximum area of sections
- Body Shape Coefficients: Prismatic Coefficient, Block Coefficient, Vertical Prismatic Coefficient, Waterproof, Wet Surface
- Stability parameters: transverse and longitudinal inertia, metacentric height
- Curve Moment and Trim Angle
Hydrodynamics and Resistance
Using specialized software in the field of marine engineering, it is possible to simulate and test any type of buoyancy in all operating conditions. It is possible to predict the buoyant hydrodynamic resistance without the need for a tensile test. It is possible to analyze, understand, and improve the flow around the body and its accessories such as the rudder using CFD software. Thus, it is possible to determine the frictional forces (compressive and viscous), moments, and other flow characteristics according to customer requirements.
Speed and power
How fast the designed float can move in the water is an important question. There are usually two different ways to do this. The Savitsky method is used to predict the body of the flight and the Holtrop method to move the body. But these two methods usually have limitations, so numerical methods are used.
What ships can be designed and analyzed?
In fact, despite the various design and numerical simulation software, there is no limit to their computation. It can therefore be said that it is possible to design and analyze the following types of vessels and offshore structures.
- Monohulls
- Multihulls
- Floating with a butterfly or with a chest thruster
- Floating docks, pontoons, floating platforms, semi-submersible,…
- Commercial: Tanker, Bulk, Container
- Land Craft, barge
- Speed Boats, Catamaran, Pilot
- Types of composite and metal vessels
In general, any device which is floating or submerged can be designed and analyzed.
Preparation of stability and float calculations
Floating stability is one of the principles of marine structural and hydrostatic design. This calculation, which is contained in the Stability Booklet, is one of the mandatory technical documents that must be submitted to rating agencies to obtain a class. After taking the class, a copy of the booklet will be provided to the captain of the ship.
