What is Multiple Step Analysis?

Multiple step analysis is an analysis approach used in finite element analysis (FEA) software. It involves performing the analysis in multiple sequential steps that represent different stages of loading or phenomena. This allows the model to simulate time-dependent processes in a step-wise manner.

Some examples of when multiple step analysis is useful:

• Applying loads gradually over time – Instead of applying all loads at once, you can apply them in steps to more accurately simulate how loads develop in reality.

• Simulating transient loads – Loads that vary with time, like impact or impulse loads, can be applied in multiple steps to capture the time-varying nature.

• Modeling time-dependent material behavior – Materials like concrete, polymers, and composites exhibit time-dependent behavior under load. Multiple step analysis allows the material properties to be updated at each step to reflect this.

• Simulating temperature changes over time – Temperature loads can be applied in steps, with the material properties updated accordingly at each step.

• Modeling damage evolution – Damage mechanics models require the damage parameter to be updated at each step based on the cumulative damage. Multiple step analysis facilitates this.

• Integrating with external/internal solvers– Nonlinear analysis often requires iterating between FEA and different external/internal solvers. Multiple step analysis allows data to be exchanged between steps.
